Before I Die
I’ve always had a love affair with Southern California, and San Diego in particular. There’s just something about the amazing diversity of people that has always mesmerized me.
My wife and I feel blessed to live in a really cool, hip, funky, neighborhood. We love it here because there’s so much to see and do, and it’s all within biking distance.
There’s an eclectic variety of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops . And the people! None of us look alike- and I love it!!
There’s this one place, a bar down the street from my house, that has this enormous outdoor chalkboard.
I’m not kidding, this thing is huge! It’s about 40 feet long and 12 feet tall and boldly says “BEFORE I DIE…….” and then has hundreds of places for people to write in what they want to do – you guessed it – before they die.
A lot of the thoughts people scribble on that chalkboard are funny, even hilarious. Some are tragic. Some are provoking and others mean nothing at all, barely legible as if written during a night of partying.
And this really got me thinking.
Dad Was Right- Time Does Fly!
My dad always said “Scott, time flies! The years fly by so fast. And just wait until you get older……they go by even faster”
Dang! Dad was right!
To make matters worse, our digital age with all of its hypnotic power to distract, has become a powerful sedative.
Life is going by even faster and perhaps we don’t notice near as much.
Day by day, sunrise to sunset, the years of our lives pass by.
Before we know it, we’re 18.
Then…..well, you get the idea.
Stretch, Grow, Become!
So, what do you want to do before you die? Is that uncomfortable to even think about?
Does it make you contemplate death and the end of your time here on the planet? Does it make you acknowledge the end of the ride?
Or does it cause you to reflect on the preciousness of life? Does it influence you to slow down, smell the roses, and dream a little?
Does it cause you to acknowledge the people you call friends, family, and loved ones, and to love them even more deeply, knowing that like you, they won’t be here forever either?
Personally, before I die, I want to……
Leave something, a book or books, so others could learn from my experience in life and love.
Take a month off and take an amazing motorcycle trip across the country. Ok, better make that two months!
Ensure my wife fully knows just how much she means to me and that I love her unconditionally for all that she is.
