Choices: The Menu of Life
Life is all about Choices
Every day we are bombarded with problems to solve and decisions to make. We live in such a “gotta do it right now” culture that often these questions come at us so fast, we don’t realize how little thought we’re putting into each decision.
Maybe these questions have crossed your mind:
Where to live. What career to pursue. Who to date. What to purchase. What to watch on TV. When to go on vacation. How to spend my “free time”. What to have for lunch.
We could go on all day with this stuff- the list is truly endless. And whereas some of these choices can seem somewhat trivial, others can have lifelong impact
Every decision is a spiritual decision
I’m an avid people watcher! People fascinate me to no end, and I enjoy observing their behaviors and habits. I also enjoy observing my own attitudes, thoughts, habits, and behaviors- and that’s one of the things that makes me great at what I do as a coach.
Let’s talk about something I witnessed years ago. I was having lunch and noticed a young couple praying over their food. That’s nice to see- two people being publically grateful for what they had and honoring God by praying a blessing over the food. I really like seeing that. But as I meditated more about what I saw, I thought that perhaps their prayer was a little too late. Let me explain.
This couple was noticeably overweight. Don’t get me wrong- I wasn’t staring at them! But it was obvious that they were both obese- or perhaps even morbidly obese. I also noticed what they were about to eat- burgers, fries, and sodas.
And that brings me to my spiritual point.
I believe the prayer and meditation (one of many throughout the day) should’ve been initiated before they even asked each other where they wanted to eat. You see, when I hold the “menu of life”, I want God to bless my choice. They could have prayed and meditated, “God, what is the wise thing for me to eat today?” You see, there are two powers out there that have very different plans for your life. One path leads to more of the same and often much worse, and the other path leads to a blessed life.
The Bible has something to say on this topic, so let’s check it out-
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants would live”. Deuteronomy 30:19
The next time you’re presented with a choice, stop and take the time to really consider all the implications. What are your needs…..and what are merely wants. What choice would serve you well for the long term…..and what would simply taste good in the moment.
Stretch, Grow, Become.
How about you? Has there been a choice in your life that you would do differently? Maybe even something small like what you had for lunch…..the tribe awaits your comment.
Change isn’t easy. If it was, everyone would be living the dream. Having a coach who takes people from where they are to where they want to be can make all the difference. Call me today to learn more.
